With the release of the Volleyball Canada 2025 beach national teams on Thursday (Jan. 16), two University of Toronto Varsity Blues volleyball alum in Heather Bansley and Martin Licht have been included among the 15 selected athletes.
A three-time Olympian, including competing at the most recent Paris 2024 games, Bansley remains a staple of the senior women’s national team. The senior athletes will compete as part of the Volleyball World’s Beach Pro Tour.
As for Licht, he was one of seven men named to the Volleyball Canada NextGen team. Previously competing with the summer beach team in 2024, Licht and the NextGen squads will look to continue their recent successes on the NORCECA Tour.
“This year’s roster features an exciting blend of veteran talent and emerging stars,” said Kerry MacDonald, Volleyball Canada’s Chief Sport Officer. “Building on the incredible achievements of Brandie and Mel in Paris, along with the strong performances of our Next Gen teams to close out 2024, 2025 is shaping up to be a remarkable year for Canadian beach volleyball.”
Bansley competed as a member of the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team for five seasons between 2005 to 2010, while Licht completed three seasons of competition at U of T from 2019 to 2023.
