The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team took down the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, Feb. 8 in straight sets at the Goldring Centre on senior night, as they honoured their four graduating students: Connor Vanderkuip, Jayden Talsma, Lukas Humle, and Kenneth Mann.
Toronto asserted dominance right from the start, setting the tone with a commanding .548 attack percentage in the first set, winning 25-19. Despite a few errors in the second set, the Blues maintained composure, securing it 25-15. The third set saw Trent push back with improved offense, but Toronto’s efficient plays carried them to a 25-20 finish, completing the sweep.
Jayden Talsma led the Blues with 12 kills and an impressive .632 hitting percentage. Iannis Toma contributed 11 kills and led the blocking efforts with four block assists. Setter Michael Hickey orchestrated the team’s offense with 28 assists and added 8 digs. Lukas Humle recorded a service ace, while Talsma led the overall point tally with 12 points.
The Trent Excalibur faced challenges offensively, finishing with a .098 hitting percentage. Nic Badalato stood out, leading the team with nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Setter Ashwynn Deol provided 17 assists and contributed defensively with three digs.
The Blues improve their record to 13-5 on the season. U of T will look to close out their campaign in Kingston, Ont. next weekend against the RMC Paladins. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 and came be streamed online via oua.tv.
