The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team opened their 2025 schedule by facing off against the York Lions on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Tait McKenzie Centre in Toronto, Ont.
The match proved to be a challenging outing for the Blues, who fell to the Lions in straight sets (20-25, 24-26, 20-25). Toronto started strong in the first set, keeping the score tight before York pulled away with a late surge. The Blues displayed resilience in the second set, pushing York to extra points but ultimately coming up short. Despite their best efforts, the team struggled to contain York’s efficient attack in the third set, which sealed the match.
Individually, Hunter Arulpragasam led the Blues in kills with 10 and total points (12.0). Setter Michael Hickey orchestrated the offense with 24 assists while contributing defensively with seven digs. Joshua Chapman was pivotal with eight kills and 9.5 total points, while Luka Minic added 6.5 points, including four kills. The Blue collectively registered three service aces and two blocks.
York’s performance was spearheaded by Martin Prinsloo and Chris Hoffman, who recorded 12 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Jasraj Nijjar tallied 43 assists and was instrumental in the Lions’ offensive rhythm. The Lions’ efficient attack percentage of .376 underscored their dominance throughout the match.
Despite the loss, the Blues showed flashes of promise and will look to regroup in their next outing against the Lions on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. in the second half of this back-to-back on the road. The game can be streamed online via oua.tv.
