Published on

BRANDON, Man. – The Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball fell just short Saturday in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to Brandon from the Healthy Events Centre.

Calgary nearly finished the weekend road sweep, but just ran out of time in the fifth, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25, 25-19, 13-15.

The Dinos fall to 7-11 with the loss, while Brandon moves to 7-9 with the win.

Calgary opened things up with the first point of the match and never trailed the rest of the way in the opening set, closing things out with a big kill from Cole Czepuryk.

The Bobcats reversed the script in the second, jumping out to a 4-1 lead early. Calgary fought back and tied things up at 13-13 after a kill by Tyler Funk, but Brandon was able to pull ahead down the stretch to even things up.

An 8-2 run by Brandon in the third opened things up before another big run helped the home team take the 2-1 edge.

The Dinos battled back in the fourth. Leading 12-10, Calgary rattled off the next four points and pushed the lead to 24-15 on a block by Louis Kunstmann and Max Penner before closing things out and forcing this one to a fifth set.

Brandon jumped out to a 5-1 early edge in the fifth, but Calgary continued to fight, leveling things up at 5-all. A kill by Austin Ellchuk tied things up at 12-12, but the Bobcats were able to just enough, finding the floor on a loose ball at the net to claim the win.

Calgary now has a week off before returning to the court one last time this year, heading to Edmonton to take on MacEwan Feb. 14-15.
