CALGARY, Alta. – In a rematch of Friday night’s tight battle, the University of Calgary Dinos and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies returned to the court for another well-contested matchup. In yet another tight showdown, the Dinos fell short in a five-set battle, falling 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 15-11).
The Dinos team came out firing, claiming the first three points of the match. Louis Kunstmann led the offensive charge, establishing early momentum for Calgary. Despite the Dinos’ early dominance, the Huskies maintained a slight edge midway through the first set. A critical kill from Tyler Funk levelled the score at 23-23, and the Dinos took advantage of key opportunities to secure a 25-23 victory. Calgary’s .294 hitting percentage underscored their efficiency in the opener.
Saskatchewan found its rhythm in the second set, outpacing Calgary with 15 kills to 12, and capitalized on a .263 hitting percentage. The Dinos were aggressive at the net, but the Huskies held firm and evened the match.
Cole Czepuryk set the pace for the Dinos with a decisive down-the-line kill to open the third set. The Huskies struggled to find effective blocks for Kunstmann, whose kills repeatedly got through their defense. The set remained relatively even, tied at 18-18 before the Dinos took charge and were first to enter the red zone 20-18. Although both teams had equal attack attempts during the third set, Kunstmann’s powerful swing led the Dinos to a 25-21 victory.
The fourth set saw the Dinos dealing with unexpected errors, allowing the Huskies to seize the advantage. The Huskies capitalized on key moments and controlled the tempo, winning 25-18 to force a decisive fifth set.
Service errors plagued the Dinos and proved costly in the fifth set. Marked by tight play and intense exchanges, both teams recorded six kills each. The Dinos took an early lead, 5-3, but a three-point run by the Huskies shifted momentum. Saskatchewan took control with key defensive stands, securing a 15-11 victory and claiming the match.
The Dogs were led by another strong performance from Emmett Graham, who finished the match with a team-high 21 points. Isaiah Mamer also impressed once again, going for 16.5 points in the win. Jacob Baird made it three Huskies to finish with double-digit point totals, recording 12.
The Dinos hit the road next weekend, travelling to Abbotsford, B.C. for a weekend set against Fraser Valley. Meanwhile, the Huskies head home to host MacEwan, starting Friday.
