CALGARY – Calgary’s Sophia Hansen has been named the Canada West Rookie of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
It was a strong start to her collegiate career for Hansen. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter led the Dinos in both total kills (262) and kills/set (3.23) as a rookie, ranking seventh and ninth in all of Canada West in those two categories, respectively.
A product of Edmonton, Alta., Hansen was one of three Dinos to start all 20 regular season games on the year and helped lead this year’s young squad back to the postseason after missing out on the playoffs a season ago.
Hansen also finished year one with 110 digs, 22 service aces, and 20 total blocks while hitting .214.
This marks the fifth time a Calgary player has been named the conference rookie of the year in program history – all coming since the year 2000 – and is the first since Kate Pexman did so in 2015.
“Sophia has made an immediate impact within the conference,” Dinos head coach Christine Biggs said. “In our program, her work ethic, competitive spirit and commitment to putting the team first have quickly projected her into a strong leader – both on the box score and in the team room. She has grown tremendously throughout the season. We’re proud of the work she’s put in and excited to see her career continue to evolve and develop as a Dino.”
