Published on

SASKATOON, Sask. — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s volleyball team returned to the Physical Activity Complex on Friday evening (Oct. 30) for their 2026–27 Canada West home opener, welcoming the UBC Thunderbirds to Saskatoon for the first match of the weekend series. Despite a determined third-set comeback, the Huskies fell 3-1 to the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds established themselves early in the opening set, putting pressure on Saskatchewan with an efficient offensive performance. UBC maintained control throughout the frame, limiting the Huskies’ opportunities to establish momentum and taking the first set by a score of 25-12.

Saskatchewan responded with a more competitive effort in the second set, finding its footing offensively and challenging the visitors. The Huskies kept themselves within striking distance as both teams battled for control, but the Thunderbirds remained composed in the closing stages. UBC ultimately secured a 25-22 victory, taking a commanding two-set lead into the third.

With their backs against the wall, the Huskies delivered their strongest performance of the evening in a thrilling third set. Refusing to let the match slip away, Saskatchewan battled point for point with the Thunderbirds in an extended frame that pushed well beyond the 25-point mark.

Neither side was willing to concede as the intensity continued to build, with the Huskies demonstrating their resilience in front of the home crowd. Saskatchewan ultimately prevailed 30–28, earning a hard-fought set victory and keeping its hopes of a comeback alive.
The third-set victory marked a turning point in the match, giving the Huskies an opportunity to extend the contest and challenge the Thunderbirds in a fourth set.

However, UBC responded with a strong performance of its own. The visitors reestablished their offensive rhythm and maintained control throughout the fourth frame. Despite Saskatchewan’s efforts to carry its momentum forward, the Thunderbirds closed out the set 25-16 to secure the 3-1 match victory.

The Huskies will look to build on the positives from Friday’s performance as they continue their Canada West home-opening weekend against UBC at the PAC Saturday afternoon.
