LIONS DROP FRONT HALF OF WEEKEND SET WITH WARRIORS IN STRAIGHT SETS

Published on

The York University Lions women’s volleyball team hit the road on Friday night to commence a two-game weekend set against the Waterloo Warriors. They were looking to secure their second win of the year after a pair of tough losses to Guelph and Toronto last weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The opening set saw the Lions secure the first point thanks to a Warriors error. The set remained fiercely competitive, with both teams neck-and-neck. However, at 9-9, the hosts gained momentum, widening the gap as much as 18-13. The score eventually reached 19-17 when Victoria Herrington delivered a crucial kill, closing the margin to 1. Despite several Waterloo’s errors aiding York in narrowing the gap, they fell short by a count of 25-22 and the Warriors took a 1-0 lead.
  • Amarai Endes opened the second set with a kill for the Lions, tying the set score at 1-1. With York trailing 16-9, back-to-back kills from Endes and Alisa Trubyuk narrowed the gap to 16-11.  However, the Warriors took back over from there and claimed the second set 25-16, securing a 2-0 lead in the match. Trubyuk and Endes led York with four kills each through two sets.
  • The Lions gave up the first four points of the third and eight of the first 10. Herrington and Brooklyn Parliament smashed back-to-back kills to cut the Warrior lead to 21-14, fuelling hopes of a potential fourth set. Unfortunately the Lions never got closer, Waterloo’s Marlyn Ma delivering the final kill, securing a 25-15 victory for the Warriors and ultimately winning the game 3-0.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions remain in Waterloo for the rematch against the Warriors tomorrow, January 13. The first serve is set to fly at 4:00 p.m.
