HAMILTON, Ont. – Powered by more than 800 gifts and an extraordinary show of support from across the Marauder community, the 2026 Marauder Giving Challenge has reached new heights, raising a record $266,129.32 to support student-athletes across McMaster University’s varsity programs.
The October 22 initiative brought together alumni, families, friends and supporters in a collective effort to invest in the future of Marauder Athletics, generating $226,129.32 in direct contributions, complemented by $20,000 in University Young Alumni matching funds and an additional $20,000 in Athletics & Recreation challenge funding.
Surpassing last year’s record of $218,302, the campaign’s sixth edition marks another milestone in a growing tradition of generosity, creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes to pursue excellence in competition, in the classroom and beyond.
“The Marauder Giving Challenge continues to demonstrate the remarkable commitment our community has to the success and well-being of our student-athletes,” said Keenan Jeppesen, Director, Athletics & Recreation at McMaster University. “To see our community come together in such a meaningful way, year after year, is something we’re incredibly proud of.”
Standout performances across Marauder programs
The campaign saw impressive fundraising efforts across McMaster’s varsity programs, with teams engaging their communities through personal outreach, creative social media initiatives and friendly competition throughout the day.
Swimming led all programs with an impressive $42,725 raised, while women’s basketball followed with $29,032.
Men’s lacrosse ($19,032) and men’s basketball ($18,400) also generated significant support, alongside women’s soccer ($14,860), women’s rugby ($12,302) and women’s volleyball ($11,110).
Beyond those leading the fundraising totals, several programs demonstrated the strength of their dedicated communities. Nordic skiing raised $6,067, while figure skating generated $5,603.52, reinforcing the campaign’s ability to create meaningful opportunities across varsity sports of all sizes.
Each participating program outlined its own case for support, identifying priorities ranging from equipment and training opportunities to competition travel, athlete development and initiatives designed to reduce financial barriers for student-athletes.
For Nico Correa, Advancement Officer, Alumni Engagement for McMaster Athletics & Recreation, the campaign’s success is a reflection of the relationships that connect supporters to the programs and people they believe in.
“What makes this year’s result so meaningful isn’t just the record-breaking total, but more than 800 individual acts of generosity that helped make it possible,” said Correa. “Every gift represents someone who believes in our student-athletes and wants to see them succeed. Whether it’s an alumnus giving back to the program that shaped their university experience, a family supporting their student-athlete, or someone making their first contribution, that generosity creates opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. We’re tremendously grateful to everyone who continues to invest in our teams and the people who represent them.”
Friendly competition fuels additional support
Alongside direct contributions, the Marauder Giving Challenge featured a series of competitions designed to recognize donor participation, encourage engagement and unlock additional funding for varsity programs.
Women’s rugby emerged as one of the day’s most successful competitors, capturing the Half-Time, Last Shift and Overtime challenges, along with recognition in the Hidden Gems and Rookie challenges.
Women’s volleyball claimed the Warm-Up and Alumni challenges, while figure skating took the Dr. Wood Student Scramble and earned additional prizes through the Hidden Gems and Rookie challenges.
Women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse each secured $1,000 through the Fill the Stands Challenge, recognizing their success in rallying supporters.
The day’s bonus opportunities also included the OUA Team Challenge, which recognized qualifying teams for reaching fundraising milestones, and the Early Bird Challenge, rewarding programs that generated support in the opening hours of the campaign.

Bringing the Marauder community together
Following its introduction last year, the in-person Marauder Giving Challenge event returned to the David Braley Athletic Centre, bringing an added sense of energy and community to complement the fundraising campaign.
Throughout the day, the Fitzhenry Gallery near the Thérèse Quigley Sport Hall served as a gathering place for student-athletes, coaches, students and supporters to connect, celebrate their programs and encourage participation.
Student-athletes representing a variety of Marauder teams helped bring the event to life, engaging with visitors, rallying support and demonstrating the passion and personality behind their respective programs.
The Director’s Challenge once again provided an opportunity for students and visitors to participate, with in-person voting helping determine additional funding for two varsity teams. Women’s rugby and men’s rugby emerged as the top two teams in the voting competition, each receiving a $250 bonus.
Impact beyond the numbers
While the fundraising totals represent another significant milestone, the true impact of the Marauder Giving Challenge is reflected in the opportunities those contributions create for McMaster student-athletes.
For women’s rugby student-athlete Annie Gray, that support is felt in the everyday experiences that make competing at the university level possible.
“My women’s rugby teammates and I have become experts at studying on buses, stretching in hallways, and eating dinner at 10 p.m. Donor support is the reason the bus shows up, the physio is waiting, and we arrive ready to compete instead of just arriving,” Gray said.
“You won’t see your name on the scoreboard, but trust us, your support is there in every result.”
For other programs, donor support helps overcome unique challenges associated with their sports, ensuring student-athletes can continue pursuing opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach.
“Being a member of the McMaster Nordic Ski team has shaped my undergraduate experience, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our donors,” said Nordic skiing student-athlete Claire Stephen.
“Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to race, train and grow as student-athletes. As Nordic skiers in Hamilton, we face real barriers, and without you, we’d just be a group of skiers dreaming of being on snow.”
Together, those experiences demonstrate the importance of continued donor investment in creating meaningful, accessible and memorable student-athlete experiences across McMaster’s varsity programs.
A lasting commitment to student-athlete success
As the sixth annual Marauder Giving Challenge comes to a close, McMaster Athletics & Recreation extends its appreciation to the alumni, families, friends, community members and supporters whose generosity has helped establish another record-breaking year.
The campaign’s success is a testament not only to the strength of the Marauder community, but also to the relationships and experiences that connect generations of student-athletes to McMaster.
While the 2026 Marauder Giving Challenge has come to a close, the opportunity to make a difference continues year-round. Supporters can contribute to their favourite Marauder programs at any time, helping create meaningful opportunities for current and future generations of McMaster student-athletes.
