MONTREAL – Marie-Christine Lapointe, a two-time all-star at McGill University who played for the Canadian national team, has been named the full-time head volleyball coach of the Martlets. The native of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., was elevated from her role as an assistant coach under Rachèle Béliveau, who is retiring this month after 34 years at the helm.
“The McGill volleyball program is set for exciting growth in the years to come,” said Daniel Méthot, director of sport programs at McGill. “Marie-Christine is familiar with the way our program functions, brings a positive attitude and will be a great asset. She comes in with a versatile background after an elite playing career. She loves coaching and is keen to develop in that field. She truly understands the academic demands of being a student-athlete at McGill and has a positive influence on everyone.”
A two-time RSEQ conference all-star who played five seasons for McGill, Lapointe began her playing career as a setter during her freshman year in 2009, then was converted to a right-side power-hitter. She was part of the McGill squad that won bronze at the 2012 national championship in Hamilton, Ont. Lapointe, who did not speak English when she enrolled at McGill, went on to make the Dean’s Honour List and achieve Academic All-Canadian status. She graduated in 2014 with a degree in kinesiology, followed by a physical education degree in 2016.
“There’s something special about coming back to this program and I’m incredibly excited and honoured to carry the torch for Martlets volleyball,” said Lapointe. “Playing for and coaching with Rachèle has led me to push myself beyond where I thought was possible, both academically and professionally, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to follow in her footsteps. Her program has always driven us to become the next generation of leaders in the classroom and on the court. I will strive to build on her legacy as we move forward. My goals are to push Martlets Volleyball to be one of the country’s top programs and create an environment where our athletes can reach their maximum potential.”
Lapointe, who previously played in 38 beach volleyball competitions for Canada from 2016 to 2020, has been overseeing the team’s development program that serves as a feeder system for the Martlets and she has served as strength and conditioning coordinator for the squad.
Outside of her time at McGill, she was an assistant coach with the Quebec youth team (2023) and was a teacher and coach at both, École Saint-Frère-André (2016-2021) and École secondaire Louis-Riel (2021-2023).
She is one of 23 women currently coaching within the McGill varsity sports program, with continued support from the Kerr Family Women in Sport Program and affiliated services for both coaching staff and female student-athletes.
“It’s a great fit because Marie-Christine is an alumnus of our program who has also shown remarkable potential and dedication to the team during her time as an assistant coach over the past two seasons,” said Lisen Moore, manager of the McGill varsity sports office. “With her extensive playing experience at both the U SPORTS level and with the Canadian beach volleyball program, she brings a fresh perspective to the team and is committed to maintaining and enhancing the program’s elite status in Quebec and Canada, both on and off the court.”

Marie-Christine Lapointe, diplômée de McGill et ancienne athlète de l’équipe nationale, nommée entraîneure-chef du programme de volleyball des Martlets
MONTRÉAL – Marie-Christine Lapointe, deux fois sélectionnée au sein d’équipes d’étoiles à titre de représentante de l’Université McGill et membre de l’équipe nationale canadienne, a été nommée entraîneure-chef de l’équipe de volleyball des Martlets. Originaire de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, elle a été promue de son rôle d’entraîneure-adjointe sous la direction de Rachèle Béliveau, qui prendra sa retraite ce mois-ci après 34 ans à la barre de l’équipe.
« Le programme de volleyball féminin de McGill est sur la bonne voie pour connaître une progression significative au courant des prochaines années », a déclaré Daniel Méthot, directeur des sports d’excellence à McGill. « Marie-Christine connaît bien le fonctionnement et la culture de notre programme, elle apportera une attitude positive et sera un atout de taille. Elle arrive avec une riche expérience à la suite d’une carrière d’athlète de haut niveau. Elle adore enseigner et partager ses connaissances et souhaite poursuivre son développement dans ce sport qui la passionne. Elle est très à l’affût des exigences académiques d’une étudiante-athlète à McGill et insuffle une influence positive sur toutes celles et tous ceux qui l’entourent. »
Deux fois étoile de la conférence RSEQ, Lapointe a représenté McGill durant cinq saisons. Elle a débuté sa carrière d’étudiante-athlète universitaire en tant que passeuse lors de sa première année en 2009 et elle a fait partie de l’équipe de McGill qui a remporté la médaille de bronze au Championnat national de 2012 à Hamilton, en Ontario. Lapointe, qui ne parlait pas anglais lorsqu’elle s’est inscrite à McGill, a ensuite été nommée sur la liste de mérite académique du Principal et a obtenu le titre d’étoile académique canadienne. Elle a obtenu un diplôme en kinésiologie en 2014, puis un diplôme en éducation physique en 2016.
« Il y a quelque chose de très spécial à revenir dans ce programme et je suis incroyablement excitée et honorée de porter le flambeau du volleyball des Martlets », a déclaré Lapointe. « Jouer et entraîner avec Rachèle m’a amenée à me dépasser au-delà de ce que je croyais possible, tant sur le plan académique que professionnel. Je suis reconnaissante d’avoir l’opportunité de suivre ses traces. Elle nous a toujours poussées à devenir la prochaine génération de leaders en classe et sur le terrain. Je m’efforcerai d’honorer son héritage au fur et à mesure que nous progresserons. Mes objectifs sont de faire du volleyball des Martlets l’un des meilleurs programmes au pays et de créer un environnement où nos athlètes peuvent atteindre leur plein potentiel. »
Lapointe, qui a déjà participé à 38 compétitions internationales de volleyball de plage pour le Canada de 2016 à 2020, a supervisé le programme de développement de McGill, fleuron du système de formation pour les jeunes Martlets et a été coordonnatrice du conditionnement physique de l’équipe.
Outre son engagement à McGill, elle a été entraîneure-adjointe au sein du programme des équipe du Québec (2023) et a été enseignante et entraîneure à l’école Saint-Frère-André (2016-2021) et à l’école secondaire Louis-Riel (2021-2023).
Elle fait partie d’un important contingent de 23 femmes qui sont actuellement entraîneures au sein des équipes universitaires de McGill.
« C’est une excellente nomination pour notre programme, car Marie-Christine est une ancienne de McGill qui a également fait preuve d’un excellent potentiel et d’un dévouement remarquable envers l’équipe au cours de son mandat d’entraîneure-adjointe durant les deux dernières saisons », a déclaré Lisen Moore, directrice des sports universitaires à McGill. « Grâce à sa vaste expérience d’athlète, tant au niveau U SPORTS qu’au sein du programme canadien de volleyball de plage, elle apporte un regard neuf à l’équipe et s’engage à maintenir et à renforcer le statut de haut niveau du programme de volleyball des Martlets au Québec et au Canada, autant sur le terrain qu’à l’extérieur du terrain. »
