MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS DUMP TRENT FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team is heating up at the right time.

The Lakers, winners of their last three – all sweeps – were once again hosting the Trent Excalibur as both teams wrap up their weekend.

Friday, the Lakers won 3-0 and Saturday, Nipissing secured their fourth straight win, dumping Trent 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 25-27, 25-15).

In the first set, Nipissing got off to a strong start, moving ahead 10-7 before taking a commanding 20-12 lead.

From there, they put the set away, winning 25-16.

In game two, the Lakers continued to control things, up 15-12 midway through.

They expanded their lead to 22-15 late and closed out the second set, winning 25-20, taking a commanding lead in the match.

With a chance to a sweep – which would have been their fourth straight – the Lakers came up just short in the third set.

An 11-10 lead turned into a 16-14 deficit as the teams traded points.

With the score tied 23-23, Trent went on a 4-2 run to steal the set, winning 27-25 to extend the match.

In the fourth game, which turned out to be the final set, the Lakers made no mistake in taking care of business.

Nipissing led 12-9 early and was in complete control, up 20-15 late.

From there, a quick 5-1 run capped off the set and gave the Lakers the victory in thematch.

Marc Marchand led the Lakers with 13 kills, while Taydon Shantz added 11 in the victory.

Nipissing remains at home next weekend when they host the TMU Bold for a pair of matches.
