Men’s Volleyball Takes Down Western in Four

Published on

Queen’s Men’s Volleyball met the Western Mustangs in the ARC on Friday evening. After a hard fought four sets the Gaels secured another win (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16).

With the win, Queen’s improves their record on the season to 12-3 and they build a winning streak of three.

In the first, the Gaels picked up an early deficit; they went down by eight points.

A big pancake from Alex Brdarevic (Engineering) changed the momentum for the Gaels and they went for a five-point run, bringing the score to 21-18 for the Mustangs.

“He’s a physical specimen he can jump really high, he can hit the ball really hard, and I think now that he’s learned the game and the speed of the game at this level we can use his athleticism in a way that’s going off,” Head Coach Gabe deGroot said.

Brdarevic closed out the match with ten points for the Gaels

Despite dropping the set, there was a palpable shift in the atmosphere in the ARC.

“I thought we finished the first set really well. The way played the last ten points was the way we wanted to play and the way we played in the last three sets that we won,” deGroot remarked.

The Gaels took the energy in the ARC and ran with it, going point for point with the Mustangs in the second and securing the set.

“We just started to settle in and everything that we’ve work worked on started to show,” Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) reflected.

Through the third Queen’s kept their momentum going and built up an early lead over Western. Their aggressive offense sealed the set.

The Gaels came into the fourth as an unstoppable force and closed out the match with a seven point run.

“Last year on their senior’s night they beat us 3-0 so it’s a great feeling to beat them here,” Mitrovic said.

Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) led the Gaels in the win. Licis added 17 kills, three service aces and two assisted blocks. Mitrovic secured another 15 points for the Gaels from 15 kills.

“Nick had a great night tonight both in reception and in attack. Zig also had a great night. That’s MVP style volleyball that he’s playing right now, and I think he’s showing that he can do it night after night.

The Gaels take on the Mustangs again on Saturday. Feb. 1, at 6pm in the ARC. Tickets are free for students and can be found at the Queen’s ticket website.
