Queen’s Men’s Volleyball start strong but fall to UBC in quarterfinals at U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship

Queen’s Men’s Volleyball opened their quarterfinal matchup against the UBC Thunderbirds with a first set win, but ultimately fell to the Thunderbirds 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20) Friday afternoon in Windsor, Ont.

The Gaels looked strong in the first set, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win. UBC bounced back to even the score with a 25-18 second set win before taking the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-20, to earn the quarterfinal win.

Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) was named Queen’s Player of the Match after leading the team with 15.5 points and 14 kills. Reed Venning (Arts & Science) also had a strong game for the Gaels, finishing with 14 points off 10 kills and four digs.

Ben Carr (Arts & Science) led Queen’s with 10 digs while Chris Zimmerman (Arts) had 33 assists in the loss.

With the loss, the Gaels will move to the Consolation bracket, where they will take on the Laval Rouge et Or in the Consolation Semifinals on Saturday at Noon. Fans can catch the game on CBC Gem.
