(WOLFVILLE, NS) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team had a successful two-win weekend at Acadia University with victories over the Axewomen in Atlantic University Sport action.
The REDS opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep on Friday and followed it up with a hard-fought 3-2 win on Saturday.
In Friday’s match, the REDS won (25-23/27-25/25-11).
Their strong defensive play transitioned into big offensive swings from Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC), who led the way with 14 kills and 14 digs, Lydia Green (Bedford, NS) with 11 kills and 12 digs. Kiana Huggins (London, ON) contributed 10 kills and 14 digs. On the other side, Acadia’s Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON) posted a game-high 17 digs in a losing effort.
Saturday’s match was a five-set thriller, with the REDS taking it (25-11/21-25/25-22/15-25/15-9). Talia Nixon (Fredericton, NB) displayed a strong performance as the setter, and Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) led the defensive effort with 21 digs. Green once again impressed with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Huggins continued to shine, contributing 13 kills and 12 digs. Acadia’s defense was solid, with Jenna Lake (Conception Bay South, NL) registering 23 digs and Sophie Edgar (Wolfville, NS) adding 19 digs.
With the two wins, the REDS now sit at 6-7, while Acadia falls to 6-8, as both teams are tied for fourth in the AUS standings.
The REDS return home to face the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday at 6:00pm, the first of a two-match weekend series. The Axewomen next action comes the following Friday, January 31st, when they head to St. John’s to take on Memorial.
