THIS WEEK IN SPARTA

LANGLEY, British Columbia – It is the first week of the spring semester at This Week in Sparta with only the women’s hockey team at home, while men’s hockey and men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball are on the road for Canada West conference action. The Spartan hockey and volleyball teams are matched up with the Manitoba Bisons, while the basketball teams are taking on the Victoria Vikes this weekend.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NOTABLE 

  • The Spartans are currently in third spot in the CW West division at 9-9, while the Bisons are in third place in the CW East division at 9-6-0-1.
  • TWU is currently 6-4 in their last 10 games, while Manitoba is also 6-4.
  • In their final games of the fall semester TWU went 0-2 against the UBC Thunderbirds, losing 3-1 and 3-0. While Manitoba finished the semester 1-1 against the Regina Cougars winning 2-0 and losing 4-1.
  • TWU is currently 3-7 lifetime against Manitoba. The Spartans’ last win against the Bisons was 3-0 on November 4, 2023, in Langley, B.C. The Spartans lost their last two games against the Bisons last season in Winnipeg, Man.
  • The top three teams in each division qualify for the Canada West playoffs.

  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in the CW West division at 2-15-0-1, while the Bisons are in fourth place in the CW East division at 3-11-0-1.
  • TWU is currently 0-9-1 in their last 10 games, while Manitoba is 1-8-0-1.
  • In their final games of the fall semester TWU went 0-2 against the UBC Thunderbirds, losing 6-3 on both nights. While Manitoba finished the semester 1-1 against the Regina Cougars winning 5-0 and losing 5-3.
  • TWU is currently 4-6 lifetime against Manitoba. The Spartans’ last wins against the Bisons were on November 2-3, 2023, when they won 5-2, and 3-2 in Winnipeg. The Spartans lost their last two games against the Bisons last season at home in Langley, B.C.
  • TWU has won three of the four games that they have played against Manitoba in Winnipeg since entering Canada West.

  • TWU finished CW conference play in the fall with two losses against the TRU WolfPack losing 3-2, and 3-1 in Kamloops, B.C.
  • In their final games of the first semester the Bisons swept the Regina Cougars winning 3-0 both nights in Regina, Sask.
  • TWU is currently 27-25 lifetime against Manitoba.
  • The Spartans lost their last two games against the Bisons, losing 3-1, and 3-2 on January 12-13 in Winnipeg, Man. The two losses snapped a five-match winning streak.

  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in Canada West at 7-3, while the Bisons are in eighth place 4-6.
  • TWU finished CW conference play in the fall with two wins against the TRU WolfPack, winning 3-0, and 3-1 in Kamloops, B.C.
  • The Spartans went 0-4 in their Christmas break swing through California against NCAA Div. I schools, losing 3-0 to UCLA, Pepperdine, Long Beach, and UC San Diego.
  • In their final games of the first semester the Bisons split with the Saskatchewan Huskies winning 3-2, and losing 3-2 in Saskatoon, Sask.
  • TWU is currently 31-21 lifetime against Manitoba.
  • The Spartans are currently on a 14-match winning streak against the Bisons. TWU’s last loss was 3-0 on January 23, 2016.

  • The Spartans are currently in third spot in the Pacific division of Canada West at 5-4, while the Vikes are in fourth place 4-4.
  • TWU is currently on a three-game winning streak, finishing the first semester with a 70-62 win over the UFV Cascades.
  • Early this year TWU lost 69-65 to Victoria on October 31 at the LEC.
  • The Vikes finished the first semester splitting with the Cascades winning 71-67, and losing 68-62 in Abbotsford, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 19-48 lifetime against Victoria. The Spartans’ last win against the Vikes was 83-66 in the Canada West playoffs in Regina on February 17, 2023.
  • TWU is currently on a four-game losing streak to the Victoria, before that the Spartans had won seven straight.

  • TWU is currently on a four-game conference winning streak and split their two Christmas beak games winning 87-58 against the MacEwan Griffins at home and
  • The Vikes finished the first semester sweeping the Cascades winning 98-77, and 100-75 in Abbotsford, B.C.
  • losing 79-72 to the TRU WolfPack in Kamloops, B.C.
  • Early this year TWU lost 99-69 to Victoria on October 31 at the LEC.
  • TWU is currently 21-49 lifetime against Victoria. The Spartans’ last win against the Vikes was 92-85 in overtime last January 13 at the LEC.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
