Tigers Blank REDS

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Dalhousie Tigers scored a straight sets win over the UNB REDS in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball action, Friday night at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.

The visitors won with scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18.

Dal’s Ella Hornby (Calgary, AB) had 11 kills and eight digs. She was named the Tim Horton’s Player of the Game.

The first set was a story of momentum swings.

The REDS jumped out to an early lead, but saw it evaporate quickly.

Down 10-7, the REDS called time-out.

The home team then battled back and drew even 14-14 on back-to-back services aces by Talia Nixon (Fredericton, NB), but the Tigers prevailed 25-21.

The second set was a much more even affair, with the teams within a point or two of each other at any given point.

Late in the set, after ties at 21, 22, and 23, the Tigers scored the final two points of the set, winning 25-23 and taking a two-sets-to-none lead.

Dal went up early in the third set and never really looked back, winning 25-18.

Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) led the way offensively for the home team. She had eight kills and added three blocks.

Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) registered 15 digs, while Lydia Green (Bedford, NS) added 11.

Melissa Hatfield (Beaverlodge, AB) led the Tigers with a game-high 15 kills and 13 digs, while Abby Melvin (Prospect Bay, NS) had a game-high 17 digs.

Quinn McAleer (Calgary, AB) had 30 assists for the visitors.

With the win, the Tigers are 11-3 and continue to sit atop the AUS standings.

The REDS are now 6-8 and remain tied for fourth.

The REDS and Tigers will conclude their weekend series on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm.
