Tigers outlast Huskies

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Dalhousie secured a hard-fought five-set victory over Saint Mary’s at Dalplex on Friday night, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 14-25, 21-25, 15-11.

Dalhousie began the first set with a strong showing, despite an early service error by Madelyn MacLaughlin that gave Saint Mary’s the initial lead. The teams exchanged points, but Dalhousie capitalized on a series of attack errors by the Huskies, notably with Dominika Aniolowska‘s blocks, to pull ahead. A pivotal run by Mel Hatfield, who contributed a service ace and multiple kills, shifted momentum in Dalhousie’s favor. As the set neared its conclusion, Dalhousie maintained composure, with Sophia Stubeda‘s service ace extending their lead. The set concluded at 25-21 after a Huskies attack error, giving Dalhousie the early advantage.

Dalhousie secured a 25-21 victory in the second set against the Huskies, propelled by strong performances from their front line. The set was marked by a series of back-and-forth exchanges, with the score tied multiple times. Paris Stewart and Ella Hornby each contributed key kills, while MacLaughlin provided consistent assists throughout the set. After a timeout called by the Huskies at 17-14, Dalhousie extended their lead with a service ace by Hatfield. Kasandra Trenke sealed the set with a decisive kill from a MacLaughlin assist, ensuring Dalhousie’s advantage.

Dalhousie started strong in the third set with a 4-0 run, capitalizing on two attack errors by the Huskies and a service error by Jordin Parsons. Stewart and Hatfield contributed with key kills, pushing the score to 8-2. However, the Huskies responded with a series of successful plays, including four consecutive kills by Emilia Mikanovich, to tie the score at 9-9 and eventually take the lead. A service ace by Mikanovich extended the Huskies’ advantage to 14-10. Despite efforts from Dalhousie, the Huskies maintained their momentum, closing the set with another kill by Mikanovich to secure a 25-14 victory. Taylor Lougheed was instrumental in the comeback, assisting on multiple points throughout the set.

The Huskies clinched the fourth set with a 25-21 victory over Dalhousie, highlighted by the decisive play of Mikanovich, who delivered several key kills. The set remained tight early, with the teams exchanging points up to 14-14. A brief surge by Dalhousie, including kills from Hornby and Hatfield, kept them competitive. However, the Huskies capitalized on Dalhousie’s errors, including service errors and attack errors, to create a gap. Mikanovich’s kill from a Lougheed assist sealed the set, extending the Huskies’ lead and securing the win in the period.

The fifth set began with Brea De Souza’s kill from Lougheed putting the Huskies on the board first. Dalhousie responded swiftly with Trenke and Hatfield each securing kills, followed by a service ace from Hatfield to take a 3-1 lead. The Huskies fought back, leveling the score at 4-4 thanks to kills by Esther Wildeboer and an attack error from Hornby. The teams exchanged points until Dalhousie pulled ahead with a 4-0 run, capitalizing on errors from the Huskies and a timely kill by Trenke. Despite a late push from the Huskies, Dalhousie maintained their momentum, with Hornby clinching the final point from an Abby Melvin set, securing a 15-11 victory in the set.

Hatfield led the way with 15 kills and three aces, finishing with 20 points, the highest on the team. Aniolowska contributed a solid defensive effort with four solo blocks and two block assists, totaling six blocks. MacLaughlin orchestrated the attack with 43 assists and added 16 digs to her performance. Hornby showcased her defensive skills by recording 18 digs while also contributing 13 kills.

The Huskies host the Tigers in a re-match on Sunday at the Homberg Centre.
