U SPORTS Top 10: Women’s volleyball maintains No. 7 ranking, men’s basketball holds No. 10 spot

The Brock women’s volleyball team remains at No. 7 following their bye week, while the men’s basketball team sits at No. 10 after their two-game sweep. 

Women’s Volleyball (13-3) – No. 7

After a bye week away from Ontario University Athletics (OUA) action, the women’s volleyball team maintains its No. 7 ranking in the U SPORTS Top 10. 

In their last action, the Badgers travelled to Toronto and split a pair of matches against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The first game resulted in a 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-22) win on Friday, Jan. 23 and the second finished in a 3-1 (28-30, 26-28, 25-21, 19-25) defeat on Saturday, Jan. 24. 

With a 13-3 record, the Badgers sit at second place in the OUA standings, just slightly behind the Windsor Lancers (13-3), who have the No. 1 spot via tiebreaker.

The Badgers return home to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Bob Davis Gymnasium this weekend. The first matchup is slated for Friday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m., while their Senior Game will happen the following day at 4 p.m.

After going 2-0 against the York Lions and McMaster Marauders, the men’s basketball team remains at No. 10 in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings. 

Hosting the York Lions on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Bob Davis Gymnasium for the annual All for Change game, the Brock Badgers men’s basketball team earned an 83-71 victory. Cairo Perry scored a team-high 12 points, while Ben Herbert and Birch Pockar notched 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Additionally, Michael Matas tallied a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The Badgers maintained dominance throughout the game, holding a 46-29 lead at halftime and never trailed in the second half, with Perry seeing 10 of his 12 points coming in the final two quarters of play. The interior presence of the Badgers was highlighted as they edged out the Lions in second-chance points 18-7 and rebounds 43-35. 

In the annual Paint the Meridian Red game, the Badgers bested the Marauders 89-71 at the Meridian Centre on Saturday, Jan. 31. Two players registered career highs, with Birch Pockar tallying a team-high 15 points and Perry turning in 14 points. Matas, Andrew McKenna and Isaiah Bujdoso also finished in double-digit scoring, with 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Badgers never trailed throughout the entirety of the game, finishing the first quarter up 27-15 and holding a 44-29 lead by halftime. The Badgers shot an impressive 93.8 per cent from the charity stripe, whereas the Marauders converted on 78.4 per cent of their free-throw attempts. Brock’s role players also provided great contributions as their bench players tallied 40 points to McMaster’s 12.

The Badgers now have a big test as they travel to Ottawa for a weekend doubleheader against two ranked teams. The first matchup will take place against the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. The second game is slated for the following day at 4 p.m. against the No. 3 Carleton Ravens at the Ravens’ Nest Gymnasium.
