FREDERICTON, NB – The UNB REDS won their 17th straight game, defeating the Saint Mary’s Huskies in four sets (25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-13) in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball action on Friday night at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.
The visitors took control of the first set early on, building an 8-4 lead. But the REDS rallied, pulling even 15-15, prompting a Huskies timeout.
Danielle Krzywonos delivered a big block to put UNB in front 19-17 and the REDS then pulled away for a 25-18 set victory.
The home team dominated the second set, winning 25-14.
In the third, the Huskies showed some resolve, tying the score 12-12 and then pulling ahead 18-17 on route to a 25-21 win.
But the REDS returned to form in the fourth set, winning 25-13 to take the match 3-1.
Sonya Nielsen led the REDS with 18 digs, eight kills and a block. She was named the Tim Horton’s Player of the Game.
Heather Benko struck 11 kills and had 10 digs, Talia Nixon pitched a match-high 34 assists and added 11 digs, while Lydia Green hit 16 kills and Jenna Adams had 16 digs.
Grace Blaskovits led the visitors with 20 assists and 12 digs while Brea De Souza hit 10 kills. Alena Piatukhova put up four blocks for the Huskies.
The U SPORTS No. 5 ranked REDS are now 17-0 and continue to sit atop the AUS standings.
The Huskies are 8-8, good for second place.
The teams conclude their two-match weekend series on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
