University of Saskatchewan to Host 2028 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championships

SASKATOON, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskies have been selected to host the 2028 Men’s Volleyball National Championship, U SPORTS announced last week (Feb. 27).

The Huskies will welcome the eight best teams in Canada to Saskatoon, with the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activity Complex set to play host from March 16-19, 2028.

This will mark the second time Saskatchewan has hosted the event and the first since 2015. The Huskies also previously hosted the event in 1980.

“We have been impressed by the quality of the bids presented by each host selected for this cycle,” said Matthew Davies, U SPORTS Chief Sport Officer in an announcement of multiple future championships. “Each championship venue provides student-athletes the opportunity to compete in outstanding facilities, as every host has a strong track record of delivering memorable experiences for participants and fans.”

Saskatchewan has qualified for the U SPORTS men’s volleyball championship 20 times in the programs history and claimed the national banner on four occasions (1979, 1988, 1999, 2004).

“We are thrilled to be bringing U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball back to Saskatoon for the first time in over a decade,” Chief Athletics Officer Shannon Chinn said. “This opportunity not only highlights the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and staff, but it also provides us with a platform to showcase the passion and commitment to excellence that defines our institution, community, and province. We look forward to welcoming the best teams and athletes from across the country and providing a first-class championship experience to everyone involved.”

The Huskies are led by head coach Sean McKay, who is in the midst of his sixth season as leader of the program. In 2023, McKay guided Saskatchewan to its first U SPORTS national championship tournament under his tutelage. Following their quarter-final series win in the 2025 Canada West playoffs, McKay and Saskatchewan are now one win away from returning to the national tournament.

“Saskatchewan has a long and rich volleyball history, both on the men’s and women’s side,” said McKay. “We are looking forward to seeing how our institution, volleyball community, business community, city, and province come together to put on what is one of the premier volleyball events in Canada. This championship will also provide us the opportunity to engage our alumni, showcase their contributions, and celebrate the legacy they have helped build in Saskatchewan volleyball.”

“While we are still a few years away, the program will be ready to perform in front of its fans and community.”

The Brandon University Bobcats are set to host this year’s men’s volleyball National Championships in Brandon, Manitoba from March 21-23. Earlier this season, U SPORTS also announced that the Mount Royal Cougars will host the 2027 Championships for the first time.
