MONTREAL –Elyssa Lajmi of France and Rachel Leduc of Montreal scored a dozen points apiece as the McGill University women’s volleyball squad ran its win streak to three with a 3-0 victory over the Piranhas from École de technologie supérieure, Sunday, at Love Competition Hall. The set scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-18.
The timing of a match against winless ETS (0-13) could not have been better for the Martlets, who have been stricken by a flu bug for the past week and were not able to hold a full practice until Thursday and even that was a light session.
“We’re still not 100 per cent but getting better, we have about four players who are still sick,” admitted McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. “Our objective at this point is to give a little bit of court time to our starters because we didn’t want to lose the momentum from last week. But at the same time, we now have a chance to get our younger players into the game, to build on what we have to work on.
Waskiewicz, a 5-foot-8 freshman from Laval, Que., led the team in passing at 2.36 (out of 3.0), to go along with five kills, a pair of aces and 10 digs. She started as the libero and was moved back to power-hitter after the first set. The switch in position caused a technical glitch in the live scoring stats and the second set was delayed for about six minutes until they resolved the issue.
Beaudin, a freshman libero, had four digs and two assists. She passed for a perfect 3.0 in her first set and ended up with a 2.13 passing ratio.
McGill held a 37-24 edge in kills, a 44-27 advantage in digs and a 37-22 margin in assists. The Piranhas led in stuff blocks 7-4 and both teams had five service aces.
Since starting the season with an 0-5 record, the high-flying Martlets have gone on a 7-2 run to even their record at 7-7. They now sit fifth in the eight-team RSEQ standings, four points behind the final two playoff berths held by Laval (9-5) and UQAM (9-6).
With seven games remaining before playoffs, the Martlets will now prepare for a five-hour road trip to Chicoutimi, where they will take on the UQAC Inuk (3-12) for back-to-back-back games, Jan. 24-25.
