Published on

The 2–12 Mount Royal Cougars hosted the 5–11 UBCO Heat at Kenyon Court on Friday night in a competitive, back-and-forth matchup that showcased both teams’ determination.

UBCO set the tone early in the opening set, jumping to a 6–2 lead before an Aurora Bentrim kill sparked a response from the Cougars. The Heat continued to apply pressure, with middle Ali Rathlef anchoring a strong defensive stretch to extend UBCO’s lead to 13–7.

Mount Royal countered at the net, as Mya Morgan and Taryn Sieben combined for a timely block, and a Bronwynn Davies-Neira service ace brought the Cougars within two. Natalie Funk steadied the Heat, restoring a five-point cushion at 20–15, and UBCO closed out the set 25–18 to take the early lead.

The Cougars bounced back in the second set, opening with a fast 5–2 advantage. Sydney Scatcherd pushed the lead to 9–4, forcing an early UBCO timeout. Mount Royal’s defense continued to frustrate the visitors, and a powerful Davies-Neira kill extended the lead to 14–8, prompting another timeout. Faith Obasi later widened the margin to eight at 20–12, capping a dominant stretch for the home side. Mount Royal closed the set 25–15 to even the match and regain momentum.

The third set began tightly, with UBCO’s Marija Josipovic and Madison Gardner keeping the visitors within striking distance, while Scatcherd and Bentrim answered to hold it 10–10. Mount Royal gradually took control with a balanced team effort, building a 17–12 lead that forced a Heat timeout.

Morgan continued to dominate at the net as the Cougars’ lead swelled to double digits. Powered by aggressive serving and cohesive team play, MRU rolled through the remainder of the set, winning 25–12. Eleven team service aces proved a decisive factor in the dominant performance.

Momentum carried into the fourth set, with UBCO staying competitive early at 5–5. Key kills from Davies-Neira and Bentrim helped the Cougars pull away to 15–6 and maintain control for the remainder of the set. Mount Royal finished strong, recording a season-high 14 service aces and combining for 45 kills, taking the final set 25–17 to cap a commanding team performance and secure a decisive win at home.

MRU takes Friday night’s action 3-1.
