EDMONTON – Daisy Olsen had a game-high 11 kills to lead the University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team to a convincing three-set sweep of MacEwan Saturday evening from the David Atkinson Gym.
One day after having to come back from a two-set hole in the weekend opener, the Dinos (5-3) would have no such obstacles to overcome Saturday in the lopsided win, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16.
Calgary hit .309 for the match, including .485 in the third, while holding MacEwan (0-8) to just a .019 hitting clip.
Olsen led the way for Calgary with the game-high 11 kills while hitting .429 to go with eight digs. Carolyn Berze joined her teammate in double-digit kills with 10 to go with seven digs and a pair of aces.
At the net, Mya Sheridan racked up a career-high four solo blocks and Sammi Boag added another three individual rejections as part of Calgary’s 12 total blocks on the night.
Stella Rains ran a great offence Saturday, serving up 30 assists in the win.
Mariah Bereziuk tallied a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the way for MacEwan.
After the two teams traded the first eight points of the night, the Dinos erupted with an 8-0 run to quickly make it 12-4. There would be no looking back as Berze hammered home the final kill in an emphatic opening-set win.
The second was a closer affair until the midway point. A three-point spurt by the Griffins closed the Calgary lead to 17-16, only to see the Dinos rattle off five straight points to take complete control. Rains finished things off with one of Calgary’s five aces on the night for the 2-0 lead.
In the third, the Dinos once again took a close contest early, made the necessary adjustments and exploded to suddenly and swiftly jump ahead. Knotted up at 13-all, Olsen and Sheridan got things going with a pair of kills. Rains added a block of her own and just like that, the Dinos lead 24-14 after the 11-1 run. Berze once again was the finisher, with her kill sealing the lopsided road win.
The Scarlet & Gold return to the home confines of the Jack Simpson Gym next weekend, playing host to provincial rivals Alberta. Friday’s opener is scheduled for a 7:45 start, while Saturday’s contest is set to start at 6 p.m.
