VANCOUVER – UBC’s top student-athletes were celebrated Wednesday morning at the annual Academic All-Canadian Breakfast of Champions hosted at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre, presented by Perkins & Will.
222 Thunderbirds were officially recognized for achieving a minimum academic standard of 80 per cent over the 2023-24 school year including 34 who surpassed an incredibly impressive 90 per cent average.
Among those in attendance to celebrate these outstanding achievements were deans representing a large array of UBC faculties, along with coaches, staff, donors and special guests.
UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon, addressed the crowd while Master of Ceremonies, UBC Managing Director of Athletics and Recreation, Kavie Toor also highlighted the many achievements both academic and athletic over what was truly a remarkable year for the blue and gold.
Sonya Urbanowicz (Track and field – Kinesiology) and Delaney Woods (Women’s Rugby – Media Studies) also addressed the room on behalf of all student-athletes.
The Academic All-Canadian Breakfast of Champions is an annual recognition event for varsity athletes who meet all the athletic eligibility requirements outlined by their governing body of sport (U SPORTS, NAIA) and must have been charged in a season of competition for the year they are receiving the honour.
Academic All-Canadians have been recognized by U SPORTS since 1988. 21 years ago, UBC began applying that standard to all varsity athletes and the annual All-Canadian breakfast has been held ever since.
