Brock avenged their previous defeat to Western in dramatic fashion.
The Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11) victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Jan. 25 in London.
Kylar Code led all players with 24.5 points from 22 kills and 2.5 blocks, while Adam Shapcott contributed 54 assists and two service aces in the contest, both respective game-highs.
In the first set, Brock stormed out to an early 8-1 lead, but a timeout slowed their momentum and allowed the hosts to settle in and bring the game level, before taking set one 25-23.
The second set presented much more back-and-forth action, as both teams traded points, unable to find a definitive lead. With the game even at 21-21, the Badgers put together a 4-0 run with the help of back-to-back service aces from Devin Cooney, to take the second set by a score of 25-21.
The back-and-forth action continued into the third set, but it would be the Mustangs that were able to find an edge and take set three 25-23.
Brock created some early momentum in the fourth on the back of an impressive .370 team hitting percentage in the set, and didn’t look back for the remainder, taking it 25-21 and forcing a fifth set for the second consecutive night against Western.
The Badgers carried their momentum into set five, storming out to an early 9-4 lead. A kill on game-point from Liam Strong thwarted any attempt of a Mustangs comeback, and propelled the Badgers to take the fifth set 15-11, and the game 3-2.
Brock’s hitting percentage of .213 in the contest bested Western’s .167.
Next, the Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team will head to Peterborough to take on the Trent Excalibur on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. The last meeting between these two teams featured the Badgers being victorious, by a score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20), on Dec. 2, 2023 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
