The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team’s season came to an end on Friday (Feb. 21) night in a difficult game against the Western Mustangs, as they fell in straight sets.
Western controlled the match from the first serve, securing a 3-0 sweep with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-19. Toronto kept pace early in each set, but the Mustangs capitalized on key scoring runs to pull ahead. The Blues showed resilience, battling at various moments, but they struggled to sustain momentum when facing Western’s attack.
Iannis Toma finished as the Toronto’s top scorer with 10 kills. Jayden Talsma and Hunter Arulpragasam each contributed eight kills, with Talsma also registering two block assists. Michael Hickey ran the offense, dishing out 31 assists, while Arulpragasam added the team’s lone service ace. Defensively, Kenneth Mann led the team with 15 digs, while Lukas Humle and Luka Minic contributed with a solo block each.
Western’s offense was well-balanced, with Cade Smith (12 kills), Kendall Homenick (nine kills), and Cameron McGregor (10 kills) leading the charge. Setter Michael Jones tallied 41 assists, and the Mustangs recorded five service aces, keeping Toronto’s defense under pressure throughout the match. Defensively, Western out-blocked Toronto 4-2 and finished with a .309 hitting percentage.
