The Brock Badgers women’s volleyball team head to the holiday break on a seven-game winning streak.
After going down in the first two sets, the Badgers showed resilience and rallied back to win with a 3-2 reverse sweep (17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-13) over the host Ottawa Gee-Gees at Monpetit Hall on Saturday, Nov. 30.
Leading the Badgers in scoring was Emily Foest who delivered 18 points off 16 kills, one service ace and one block. Sadie Dick and Laurin Ainsworth were not far behind with 13.5 and 13 points, respectively.
Brock held an early four-point lead, but Ottawa was able to fight back as they notched four service aces and four total blocks to take the first set 25-17.
The second set saw the Gee-Gees finish with a .361 hitting percentage compared to the Badgers’ .185 as the frame ended with a 25-17 scoreline in favour of the hosts.
After going down 21-19, the Badgers rattled off the final six points off multiple kills and three Gee-Gees’ hitting errors to keep the match alive with a 25-21 set win.
From the beginning of the fourth set, the Badgers had control, as they ran out to a 6-1 lead before winning the frame by a comfortable seven-point margin.
Ainsworth slammed a kill to get the Badgers first to the eight-point changeover in the fifth set. From there, the teams would go on to trade multiple two-point runs.
The Badgers eventually won 15-13 after scoring three consecutive points which was punctuated on the final point by an ace from Foest.
Despite falling behind in the blocks category 18-10 and service aces category 10-4, the Badgers were able to find a way to scrap together a gritty comeback victory.
Up next, the Badgers will return to action on Friday, Jan. 18, 2025, as they host the Windsor Lancers at 2 p.m. Last time out, the Badgers swept the Lancers in a weekend series (3-2, 3-0) in Windsor during the 2023-24 season on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19.
