Queen’s Women’s Volleyball extended their win streak to eight this weekend after taking down the Toronto Varsity Blues in three sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-15).
With the win the Gaels’ record on the season improves to 10-1.
“I think we deserve it; we worked so hard. We’ve really been putting in the work and intentionality,” Outside Mary Stewart (Education) commented.
Queen’s started out the first set slow, going point for point with Toronto.
“I think we came out a little bit flat. We were intentional but a bit flat on the energy and then we talked about how we want to give it our all. I think it was a mindset shift,” Mary Stewart (Education) said.
“I think its hard in this sport to be really good all the time. We spoke in that first time out about finding out rhythm and working through it and I think they did a good job responding to that. It was a bit of a slow burn,” Head Coach Shanice Marcelle added.
The slow burn proved successful, and the Gaels turned up the energy, taking the first set.
The Gaels had a strong start to the second set, going on an immediate four-point run leading the Blues to take a time out.
Queen’s kept their momentum through the timeout — aided by serves from Kennedy Millin (Education) — and went on to bag three more points before Toronto lit up the scoreboard.
With a sizable lead secured the Gaels went on to put on a performance on offense.
Hannah Duchesneau (Arts & Science) bagged 11 kills for the Gaels with a hit percentage of .320; Stewart added another nine and anchored Queen’s on defense with seven digs.
The Gaels kept building through the remainder of the second, into the third and secured another clean sweep win.
“I think they put on a really dominate display this evening and it was fun to watch,” Marcelle remarked.
Amanda Siksna (Education) led the Gaels in block with six, a week after breaking the program record for career blocks. Siksna is also first in the OUA for total blocks and fifth in the nation in blocks per set.
The Gaels are back in action in the ARC on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 2pm. Tickets are free for students and available on the Queen’s ticket website
