USask Women’s Basketball Looks to Extend Win Streak in Winnipeg
Since dropping the first two games of the 2024-25 regular season on the road to Calgary, the Huskie women’s basketball team has been unstoppable. The Dogs have won eight straight, with a 41-point average margin of victory, and have climbed into a tie for second place in the Canada West Prairie Division. The defending conference champs have also climbed the U SPORTS rankings, and just this week jumped the UBC Thunderbirds for No. 5 in the national polls. The Dogs are now the highest-ranked Canada West team, trailing only Carleton, laval, Saint Mary’s, and Ottawa.

Coming off another pair of convincing victories, this time against the Mount Royal Cougars, the Huskies are looking to extend their unbeaten streak on their first road test of the new year. They will head to Winnipeg to take on the 4-6 Wesmen who enter the weekend looking to bounce back following a pair of lopsided losses to the Calgary Dinos.

For the USask men’s basketball team, the weekend series with the Wesmen poses a different challenge, as the Dogs will look to upset the 8-2 Wesmen men’s team and claim their first win of the 2024-25 campaign. The Wesmen have been one of the strongest in Canada West midway through the season, scoring the fourth most points per game while allowing the second fewest.

Bisons Looking for Revenge in Home Weekend for Men’s Hockey
After being swept in early November, the Manitoba Bisons will visit Saskatoon this weekend looking to revenge. Unfortunately for the visiting team, the Huskies seem to be hitting their stride in all facets of the game.

The Dogs have won five straight, including weekend sweeps of the Regina Cougars and MacEwan Griffins, and have outscored opponents 34-10 over that stretch. One reason for the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked team’s success is a lethal powerplay which has converted at a 33.3% rate making them the most productive unit in the country. A top line with elite playmakers and scorers like Dawson Holt, Chantz Petruic, and Josh Pillar will do that. The trio all rank among the top point-getters in Canada West with Holt leading the group just four back of MRU’s Clay Hanus for the scoring lead with 27 points this year (7 G, 20 A). Petruic then ranks fifth with 25 (11 G, 14 A) and Pillar 14th with 20 (6 G, 14 A).

The Huskies remain second in the conference’s East Division and will need a pair of wins to keep pace with the division-leading Alberta Golden Bears ahead of a head-to-head weekend with their rivals from Edmonton next week (Jan. 24/25).

Women’s Hockey Looks to Stay on Track in Manitoba
Despite splitting their recent weekend series with the Regina Cougars (W 3-1, L 1-4), the Saskatchewan women’s hockey team is in the best position they have been all season. The Huskies have won three of their last four games, which included a weekend sweep of the MacEwan Griffins at the end of November, and have looked like a more experienced group as the year has progressed.

Over the course of their 3-1-0 streak, the Dogs have outscored opponents 7-5 which is by fair their most productive stretch of the season. They will look to continue their progression this weekend in Winnipeg as they take on a Bisons team with an even 41-41 goal differential.

Huskie Track & Field Hits the Road for Golden Bear Open
Following a successful home weekend to kick off the 2025 Canada West indoor track & field schedule, the Huskies will look to continue to build momentum at the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton this weekend.

The Golden Bear Open has been a strong weekend for the Dogs in recent memory. Just last season the team captured nine gold medals, including a sweep of the relay events, and saw eight student-athletes and one relay team earn auto qualification for U SPORTS nationals. They’ll look to continue this trend against the busiest field of competitors the team has seen so far this season.

With five athletes across six events earning U SPORTS Auto Standard at the Sanderson Classic, the Huskies have a strong start to the season as they look toward a seventh consecutive women’s title at the 2025 Canada West Championships.

Saskatchewan Volleyball looks to Continue Hot Start to 2025 at Home
After the USask men’s and women’s volleyball teams went a perfect 4-0 in Calgary this past weekend, the Dogs will look to repeat perfect weekend in their first home apperance of the new year.

With two straight victories against the Dinos in which the Dogs dropped just one set, the USask women’s volleyball team now sits in 8th-place in the Canada West standings with a 5-7 record. This weekend offers the Dogs a great chance to get back to .500 for the first time since early November, as they take on a struggling 0-10 Griffins team. With the matches against Winnipeg (5-7), Trinity Western (5-7), and UBCO (4-8) to close out the season, a pair of wins this weekend could be crucial as the Huskies look to return to the playoffs after narrowly missing out on the postseason in 2023-24.

On the men’s side the Huskies will also look to capitalize against a struggling and winless Griffins team. MacEwan sits last in the conference with an 0-12 record having won just four total sets this season while the Dogs recently moved into fourth-place after earning wins No. 7 and 8 in Calgary. Also similar to the women’s situation, the USask men close out the regular season with three straight weekends against current playoff teams, so wins this weekend could significantly impact playoff seeding for the Dogs who look to remain in the top four and host a Canada West quarterfinal series.

Wrestling Heads to Ontario Looking for to Bounce Back
After a difficult road weekend in Edmonton, the Huskie wrestling teams will look to bounce back this weekend as they travel East for the first time this season to Ontario for the Guelph Open.

This past weekend the Huskies fell to the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas in a duals event 49-4 (men) and 19-5 (women) before finishing third (men) and fourth (women) and the Golden Bear Invitational. With a large field of competitors, the Dogs will look to return to form in Guelph as they reach the final few weekends of their season schedule prior to the Canada West Championships.

The Dogs are sure to receive a boost at the conference tournament as the team is set to welcome the top wrestlers from across Canada to their home gym for the first time since 2022.
