CALGARY, Alta. – Taryn Hannah picked up where she left off the previous night and led the Saskatchewan Huskies to a 3-0 win (14-25, 17-25, 21-25) over the University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team at the Jack Simpson Gym.
Hannah recorded 15 kills on .433 hitting on Saturday night and also tallied a trio of service aces, helping her team to a weekend sweep to begin the new year. The Huskies are now 5-7 on the season.
Calgary’s night started slow, falling down 8-1 in set one. The Dinos’ play improved in the second and third sets as they kept the score close until late.
The Dinos drop to 3-9 on the campaign.
After the Huskies jumped out to a seven-point lead in the opening set, the Dinos did their best to chip away at the deficit. While it came late, a highlight for the home team was three consecutive double blocks by Arnold and Anya Fehr that tightened a set controlled by the Huskies.
Service errors from both teams were a common theme in the early part of the second set. The Huskies were the first to get out of that funk, as a mini 5-1 run helped them establish a 15-11 lead. With the score 21-17, Saskatchewan setter Tielle Hagel stepped up to the service line and closed out the set with an ace and assists on the final three kills of the second.
Setter Amelia Anderson entered the game in set three for Calgary and gave her side some jump. The Dinos scored an early 5-2 lead with a four-point run and eventually held a lead as large as four at 12-8.
From there, Hannah stepped up for the Huskies and flipped the score. The third-year outside hitter recorded four clutch kills in the late stages of the third set and Saskatchewan took advantage of Calgary errors to pull away.
In addition to Hannah’s strong showing, Ella Milne posted 12 kills with a .600 hitting percentage. Hagel finished with 28 assists.
The Dinos will hit the road next weekend to face the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford, while the Huskies are back at home to take on the MacEwan Griffins. Both weekend sets take place Jan. 17-18.
