Winnipeg, MB. The Huskies took Saturday nights’ match against the Winnipeg Wesmen to remain in hosting position in the always competitive CW conference.
The No. 8-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies salvaged a split of the weekend Canada West men’s volleyball series by sending the No. 3-ranked Wesmen to a 3-1 (28-26, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18) defeat Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg fell to 12-2 on the season and remained in a tie in win total for first place with Alberta, which split with Thompson Rivers in Edmonton.
The Huskies (10-6), meanwhile, helped their cause in a quest to remain in the top four and a potential hosting opportunity in the post-season.
The Wesmen hit .222 for the match, but ran into a Saskatchewan defence that produced 10 total blocks and 44 digs. The Wesmen, conversely, registered 39 digs and five total blocks.
Isaiah Olfert led Winnipeg with 18 kills on 38 swings, Luke Lodewyks added 11 kills and seven digs, Easton Dick notched seven on 12 swings, and Carson Brennan posted a career-high 17 digs.
Isaiah Mamer’s 13 kills led four Huskies players in double digits. Emmett Graham and Jefferson Morrow both had 11 and Jacob Baird 10. Baird also had a team-high nine digs.
Saskatchewan hit .353 on the night.
Huskies will host the UBCO Heat Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 at the PAC. Get tickets www.usask.universitytickets.com, or watch the action on canadawest.tv.
