CALGARY, Alta. – The University of Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball team could not hold off the Saskatchewan Huskies and dropped a 3-1 decision (25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 18-25) in the Jack Simpson Gym.
Friday’s matchup was the first Canada West contest in 2025 for both sides, although the Dinos and Huskies were coming off appearances at the North American Challenge in Long Beach, California.
Calgary is now 5-6 in conference play, while Saskatchewan moves to 7-4.
The Dinos came out firing in the first set against the Huskies. Louis Kunstmann controlled much of the early action, delivering seven kills and posting a .636 hitting percentage, while setter Zach Durant kept the Dinos’ attack in rhythm, recording 15 assists. Calgary’s front row maintained a strong presence at the net, and Jackson Meier capped off the set with a decisive kill that secured a 25-20 victory.
Set two saw the Huskies respond. Despite three consecutive kills by Tyler Funk, Erik Godwin, and Kunstmann, the Huskies pulled ahead and took the set 25-19. A crucial double block by Max Penner and Funk showcased the Dinos’ defensive efforts, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Huskies’ momentum.
Calgary started strong again in the third set but couldn’t maintain the upper hand as the Huskies ramped up their attack. With a .364 hitting percentage and relentless offensive pressure, Saskatchewan claimed the set 25-21.
The fourth set saw the Huskies maintain their momentum, quickly building a lead they would not relinquish. Calgary stayed within striking distance but couldn’t overcome the visitors’ offensive onslaught, as Saskatchewan racked up 19 kills on 37 attack attempts to close out the match 25-18.
Four Huskies did most of the damage on Friday. Isaiah Mamer totaled 21 kills with an impressive .500 hitting percentage. Emmett Graham (15), Lucas Musschoot (11), and Jacob Baird (9) also played a key part in the win.
Kunstmann and Godwin posted 15 and 14 kills for Calgary.
Both teams will return to the Jack Simpson Gym on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. for a rematch.
