SASKATOON, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Huskies remain perfect since returning from the mid-season break by prevailing over the MacEwan Griffins Friday night as the Dogs swept the first game of the weekend series by a final score of three sets to none (25-23, 25-15, 25-18).
Saskatchewan’s victory improves the Huskies’ winning streak to three and boosts their overall record to 6-7, good for eighth place in the Canada West.
For MacEwan, they continue to search for their first win of the season as the Griffin’s loss drops their record to 0-11.
Taryn Hannah continued her strong play as the Battleford, SK product was the most efficient hitter of the match, posting a hitting percentage of .357 and amassing thirteen kills on twenty-eight total attacks. Hannah also continues to set the tone for Saskatchewan at the service line as she totaled four aces and leads the Huskies in both categories with 159 kills and 23 aces so far this season.
Not to be outdone, Rosetta Cyr put up her best offensive performance of the season as the Arts & Science student led all hitters in the match by tallying a season-best sixteen kills while adding seventeen points and one ace.
The visitors were led by MacEwan’s leading hitter, Arden Butler, who tallied seven kills and three errors, good for a hitting percentage of .189. The outside hitter now has 84 kills and 2.27 kills per set for the Griffins in 2024-25.
The Dogs earned their victory thanks to a well-rounded effort in all phases as Saskatchewan outpaced MacEwan in kills (46-27), hitting percentage (.269 -.184) service aces (10-4) and blocks (8-6).
After a tightly contested first set that saw the Huskies narrowly edge the Griffins 25-23, Saskatchewan found their form midway through the second as Hannah, Ella Milne, and Norah Matthews earned a series of kills to make the score 17-9. Milne continued her strong play through the back end of the set as she recorded set point on the last of her eight kills during the frame.
The third set would be much the same for Saskatchewan, however this time the Huskies did not wait to make their move, going on a six-point run early in the final frame to make the score 11-5. The Griffins fought hard to extend to a fourth set, but two of Hannah’s four aces, coming on the 22nd and 23rd points, helped seal the deal for the Dogs.
The Huskies and Griffins will square off again tomorrow night (Jan 18) with first serve set for 4:30 PM on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.
