Men’s Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season With Five Set Win Over Trent

In their final game of the regular season, Queen’s Men’s Volleyball secured a five-set win over the Trent Excalibur (17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12)

In the win, four Gaels secured points in the double digits. Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) put up 20.5, Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) added 15, Reed Venning (Arts & Science) amassed 14.5, and Alex Brdarevic (Engineering) bagged 13.

Through the first, Trent attacked effectively and exploited holes in the Gaels’ defense. The Excalibur went for a seven-point run and went on the take the set.

Queen’s fought back through the second and returned to their style of volleyball, minimizing errors. In the end of the set, they consistently led by a point and took it in extra points with back-to-back kills from Dax Tompkins (Arts).

The third went point for point with kills and a service ace from Mitrovic helping the Gaels pull into the lead.

Queen’s was far more effective on the attack with an efficiency of .412 to Trent’s .161 and easily took the set 25-21.

Trent came back in the fourth, shutting down the Gaels’ attacks. Despite good block coverage from Queen’s, the Excalibur forced the fifth.

Libero Tobias Jeffries (Engineering) anchored Queen’s on defense with ten digs and played a significant role in the Gaels’ attack coverage.

The Gaels returned to their dominant style of play to secured the fifth set 15-12. 

With the win, the Gaels head into playoffs with a record of 15-5 and secure home court for their first playoff match.

In the coming weeks, Men’s Volleyball heads into playoff with their first match occurring at home on Feb. 22. Tickets are free for students and available on the Queen’s ticket website.
