On Friday evening, Queen’s Men’s Volleyball took on the Guelph Gryphons—Queen’s emerged victorious in five sets (25-20, 17-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-12).
The Gaels pulled ahead early in the first set, nabbing the first three points of the match and then going for another four-point run to bring the score to 8-3.
Queen’s maintained their momentum and easily picked up the first set, aided by kills from Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) and Nikola Mitrovic (Economics).
The Gaels also bagged the first few points of the second however, the Gryphons were quick to close the gap.
The second continued point for point, until Guelph pulled ahead and secured the set.
In the third, Guelph picked up the first five points forcing an early time out for the Gaels. Queen’s was unable to recover from the Gryphon’s substantial lead.
The Gaels light up in in the fourth, smoothing out their offense and improving their defense.
Queen’s pulled ahead at the 14 point mark with a sneaky setter dump from Chris Zimmerman. Another dump from Zimmerman tied the score up at 17-17. After some back and forth, the Gaels pulled ahead and forced the fifth set.
With momentum on their side, the Gaels put on a dominant performance in the fifth and secured their first victory of the new year.
In the win, Mitrovic led the Gaels in points, with 14.5, and in kills, with 12. Licis picked up another 11 kills.
Zimmerman added 41 assists and made a significant defensive effort with 11 digs.
