Men’s Volleyball Drops Five Set Battle to Toronto

Queen’s Men’s Volleyball split their double header weekend against the Toronto Varsity Blues. On Saturday, the Gaels fell in five sets (25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 13-15).

In the loss, Reed Venning (Arts & Science) led in points for the Gaels. Venning amassed 24 points from 21 kills and four service aces.

Zig Licis also contributed 24 points from 19 kills, four service aces, and one block.

In a tight first set, the Gaels and the Blues were neck and neck. Errors on Queen’s side of the net prevented them from pulling ahead.

The Gaels pushed forward, with back-to-back kills from Nikola Mitrovic (Economic) helping them settle into their rhythm to take the set.

Queen’s maintained their confidence into the second, building up a five point lead.

Toronto pivoted their offensive strategy, focusing on placing tips behind the block, and came back from behind.

Through the third, the Gaels improved their aggressive presence at the service line, bagging four service aces in the set from Dax Tompkins (Arts), Mitrovic, and Venning.

Their aggression at the service line set the tone for the set, bringing the Gaels the win.

Queen’s kept up the pressure in the beginning of the fourth, leading until both teams tied at 23 point. Toronto got the next two and snatched the set.

Several delays in the fifth worked in Toronto’s favor, giving them the momentum to take the match.

The Gaels closed out the game with 68 kills to Toronto’s 40. Chris Zimmerman (Arts) assisted 57 of the kills.

The Gael’s return to action in Guelph on Jan. 17, taking on the Gryphons. Fans can catch the action on oua.tv.
