CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball had a season high .273 attack percentage Friday night but it wasn’t enough in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 29-27) loss to UBCO from inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
On a night that saw both offensive units shine, the Dinos sputtered early only to rise to the Heat’s level of play but come up just short down the stretch in the final two frames.
With the loss, Calgary falls to 2-7 on the year, while the Heat improve to 4-5.
Daisy Olsen led all players with a game-high 14 kills on a career-best .591 hitting clip. She also chipped in with four digs, two blocks and an ace.
Sophia Hansen also tallied double-digit kills with 11.
Marija Josipovic and Olivia Boulding each had nine kills to lead the way for UBCO, while Natalie Funk added another eight.
As a team, the Heat served up an impressive 14 aces in the three-set win and hit .303 as a team – also a season best.
It was all UBCO in the first, jumping out to an 8-3 lead following a kill by Funk and never looking back. The Dinos tried to hang close early after a kill by Hansen closed the deficit to just 11-8. But, a 7-0 run down the stretch removed all doubt as the Heat went up 1-0.
The second was a different story. In a set that saw Calgary and UBCO knotted up 12 times, it all came down to the end. Trailing 23-19, this time it was the Dinos that used a late rally to draw even at 23-all to force a timeout by the Heat. But a kill by Funk and a block by Josipovic and Faith Solecki sent the visitors to the 2-0 lead.
It was a similar story in the third. Back-to-back aces by Kylan Finseth put UBCO ahead 17-13. A 4-0 run and a 3-0 spurt capped by a block from Olsen and Narelle Arnold saw the Dinos take a 24-23 edge. Going well into extras, it was the Heat once again coming up with the clutch moment as Funk finished things off with another ace to clinch the weekend opener.
The two teams are right back at it Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. scheduled start following the conclusion of the men’s game.
