EDMONTON — The Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball team is back in the Canada West playoffs.
The Dinos clinched their postseason Saturday with a 3-1 win at MacEwan to finish the regular season winning four of their last five.
With the win, the Dinos climbed the Canada West standings and jumped up to the No. 7 spot, earning a home best-of-three series against tenth-seeded UFV. That series will get underway Thursday at 6 p.m. inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
Back to Saturday’s regular season finale, where the Dinos hit an impressive .385 for the match, including a .458 clip in the final frame inside the David Atkinson Gym for the weekend sweep, 25-16, 25-20, 27-29, 25-19.
Cole Czepuryk led the Dinos with 16 kills, five digs and three aces in the win, while Tyler Funk recorded 14 kills and six digs.
Mitchell Croft led the Griffins with 11 kills and four digs, while Inia chipped in with 10 kills and three aces in the loss for MacEwan.
It was a tough start for MacEwan as their offence was stuck in neutral in the opening set. They recorded just four kills, and the Dinos had full control of the set, leading right from the get-go.
The Dinos continued to be in the driver set throughout the second, marching to a two-set lead after back-to-back kills from Pierce Decore.
Calgary nearly finished off the second straight sweep, but an inspired push from the home squad in the final match of the year pushed things to extras where the Griffins were able to find a way for the 29-27 win.
The Dinos elevated their game in the fourth, leading from start to finish and leaving no doubt in punching their ticket to the postseason.
After missing the postseason for the first time in six seasons last year, Calgary will make its return appearance under first-year head coach Graham Vigrass with both Thursday and Friday’s home games slated for 6 p.m. from the Jack Simpson Gym. Saturday’s start time – if necessary – will be 2 p.m.
