Weekend Story

KAMLOOPS – It will be the final chance for fans of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men’s volleyball team to fill the TCC this weekend as the ‘Pack host the Brandon Bobcats in their last weekend of the regular season.

Taking on Brandon at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, the WolfPack’s incredible second semester has set them up for a shot at qualifying for the postseason.

Holding a record of 6-12, TRU finds themselves just back of the tenth and final playoff spot. The WolfPack are chasing the 7-11 UFV Cascades, the 7-11 Calgary Dinos and the very same 8-10 Brandon Bobcats that they play host to.

On Friday night the ‘Pack will honour a pair of graduating student-athletes in Sam Flowerday and Matthew Hamilton.

Leaving TRU with his name plastered throughout the program record book, Flowerday will go down as one of the most electric attackers in WolfPack history. He is currently second in program history in kills (1103) and points (1284.5) and third in aces (106). A Canada West First Team All-Star last season after leading the entire nation in kills, Flowerday has suited up in 80 regular season games with TRU.

Joining the WolfPack in 2021, Matthew Hamilton has been a rock both on and off the court. The product of Lethbridge is a five-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian and leader for the squad. With 444 kills in his 72 games with the ‘Pack, Hamilton has made a positive impact on his team, the department and the city of Kamloops.

TRU was dominant in their last weekend of play, sweeping the Mount Royal Cougars by scores of 3-0 and 3-1 to keep the postseason hopes afloat. The ‘Pack are 4-4 in the second semester this season.

Brandon, who will host the 2025 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball National Championship, come into the weekend as winners of four of their last six games. Last weekend the Bobcats split a pair of games with the nationally ranked Winnipeg Wesmen.

These two teams met twice in Brandon last season with the Bobcats earning the sweep at home.

3 Things

1: Papa Murphy’s will be serving up pizza inside the TCC all season long.

2: On Friday night TRU is hosting Date Night with the ‘Pack. Fans will have the chance to win a staycation prize package featuring $200 in Accent Inns vouchers and $100 in Mittz Kitchen gift cards.

3: Friday’s ceremony celebrating Flowerday and Hamilton will take place after the game.

By The Numbers

152: Between them Flowerday and Hamilton have suited up in over 15- games for TRU.

106: Flowerday needs just three aces to tie Brad Gunter’s TRU record and four to take the ace title for himself.

2.52 & 2.10: The game will be a battle at the net. Brandon leads the conference with 2.52 blocks-per-set while TRU is fourth in CW with 2.10.
