York University Lions men’s volleyball player Martin Prinsloo and women’s wrester Prabhleen Randhawa have been named York athletes of the week for the period ending Mar. 2.
Prinsloo, a fifth-year kinesiology & health science major, led the Lions in points in their OUA semi-final loss to the No. 1-seed Windsor Lancers on Friday night. The Burnaby, B.C., native came in off the bench in the opening set and made an immediate impact. He had four kills which helped York make a run late in the set to take the lead. Although they eventually lost the set, and dropped the match in straight sets, Prinsloo put up 10 kills on 25 total attacks and hit .240, leading the team in kills and hitting percentage.
Despite the loss, Prinsloo and the Lions will have another chance to qualify for the U SPORTS championship Friday when they host the Western Mustangs in the OUA Bronze Medal Game on Friday at 7:00 pm from Tait McKenzie Centre. You can get your tickets here or stream the match on OUA TV.
Randhawa, also a kinesiology & health science major, wrestled to a fourth-place finish at the Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships last weekend in St. Catharines. She downed Ayla Thurston of the Lakehead Thunderwolves 12-2 by technical fall in her opening, before defeating Angel Besskkaystare of the Saskatchewan Huskies by fall at the 46 seconds into her second-round match. The second-year star put up a solideffort against eventual 65kg bronze medalist Mackenzie Cayer of the Calgary Dinos in the third round, losing by fall after 5:12. She rebounded with a commanding tech fall win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Danya Braung in the fourth round, and fell by a narrow 10-8 decision in the bronze medal bout to bronze medalist Maria Sawiak of the Alberta Golden Bears.
Randhawa and the Lions now shift their focus to the 2025-26 season following a solid season of growth for the program, which saw the men’s side various individuals on both the men’s and women’s teams ranked nationally throughout the year.
