Queen’s Sweep Gryphons in Weekend at Guelph

In a rematch of last nights game Queen’s Men’s Volleyball took down the Guelph Gryphons in five sets (19-25, 27-25, 25-27, 25-15, 15-13).

In the win, Reed Venning (Arts & Science) led in points with 20.5 from 18 kills and 4 blocks. Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) added another 12 kills and 16 points.

Guelph picked up an early lead, with attacks from Joshua Glasbergen propelling the Gryphons forwards to take the set.

Despite dropping the set, the Gaels were nearly even with the Gryphons in kills—Queen’s bagged 14 to Guelph’s 15.

The Gaels trailed though the second until they were brought back in the game with back-to-back kills from Alex Brdarevic (Engineering). Errors from the Gryphon’s side of the court brought the Gaels into the lead and secured them to set.

The third set was a repeat of the second, with both teams going point for point. This time it was the Gryphons that pulled ahead and secured a 27-25 victory.

The Gaels found their stride in the fourth set and built a significant lead. Several kills from Venning brought the Gaels the set.

Guelph struck first in the fifth, but the Gaels struck harder. After a well fought set, Queen’s picked up another win.

Several Gaels were key players on defense; Carter Sedgewick (Commerce) picked up nine digs, Chris Zimmerman (Arts) added seven and Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) and Licis secured six.

After a bye week, Men’s Volleyball will return to the ARC on Jan. 31 to take on the Western Mustangs. Tickets are for sale on the Queen’s ticket website and are free for students.
