REDS Fall To Tigers

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Dalhousie Tigers scored a straight sets win over the UNB REDS in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball action, Saturday afternoon at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.

The Tigers completed the sweep of their weekend series versus the REDS with scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-19.

After falling behind 13-6 early in the opening set, the REDS did rally to close the gap to 17-16 and then drew even with the Tigers at 21-21.

In the end, strong play by Dal and UNB errors resulted in the Tigers taking the first set 25-23.

The REDS worked from behind in the second set too.

Down 11-4, UNB head coach Lauren Hale-Miller called time-out.

A 3-0 REDS run did pull them back into the set, down 15-10, but Dal was able to hang on to that five-point advantage and led 23-18 late on route to the 25-20 set win.

Behind the strong play of second year hitter Taven Stevenson (Fall River, NS), the REDS took an early 9-7 lead in the third set and extended it to 13-9.

But the Tigers rallied and won 25-19, sweeping the match.

Registering 13 kills and nine digs, Dal’s Annik Boldon (Fredericton, NB) was named Tim Horton’s Player of the Game.

Ella Hornby (Calgary, AB) led the Tigers offence with 14 kills while Grace Calnan (Cole Harbour, NS) put up five blocks.

Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) led the REDS, registering a game-high 12 digs.

Lydia Green (Bedford, NS) had seven kills.

Stevenson finished the afternoon with 11 kills and three blocks.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 12-3. They remain in first place in the AUS standings.

UNB is now 6-9, good for a share of fourth place.

Up next for the Tigers, a Friday night home match against Moncton.

The REDS will travel to Halifax to take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a weekend series. That begins Friday with a 7:00pm first serve.
