REDS Win Again

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS improved to 6-0 win a straight-sets win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball play, Friday night at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.

Heather Benko led the REDS recording five kills, nine digs, three blocks, and four service aces.

Leading 15-14, UNB rode some strong serving by Emily Wezemen for a 4-0 run to open a five-point advantage on route to a 25-22 win.

In the second set, with Memorial up 13-10, Benko delivered two of her four aces to give UNB a slim lead.

Benko later led the REDS on another 4-0 run to close out the set 25-20.

In a back-and-forth third set, the REDS once again fashioned a 4-0 run to go ahead 17-12 and held off the Sea-Hawks 25-23.

Talia Nixon had 27 assists for the REDS and Jenna Adams had a dozen digs earning Tim Horton’s Player of the Game honours. Sonya Nielsen and Lydia Green added seven kills each.

Nella Woelfel recorded a match-high 19 digs for Memorial while Karen Greek added 24 assists and Lydia Grawer contributed seven kills.

The REDS remain atop the AUS standings while the Sea-Hawks are now 2-3, good for fourth place.

The REDS and Sea-Hawks will wrap up their two-match weekend series on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 3:00pm Atlantic.
