Sadie Dick’s home court advantage

For most student-athletes, their collegiate sports journey is defined by a single location, but for Brock University’s Sadie Dick, it’s been a story of coming home, rediscovering love for the game and creating a legacy which will inspire future generations of Badgers.

The 6-foot-2 right-side hitter and fourth-year Child and Youth Studies student has become a cornerstone of Brock’s women’s volleyball program. Since transferring from the University of Pittsburgh in 2021, Dick has helped lead the Badgers to three consecutive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women’s Volleyball Championships, earning accolades as a consistent offensive and defensive force.

Reflecting on her journey, Dick credits head coach Steve Delaney and her teammates for reigniting her passion for volleyball.

“When I transferred to Brock, I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue playing,” Dick said. “Steve told me to just come to practice and focus on having fun. That mindset, along with the support from our team, helped me regain my confidence and love for the game. The last three years wouldn’t have been the same without them.”

Delaney emphasizes that Dick’s impact goes far beyond her impressive statistics on the court.

“Sadie’s contribution to the Brock women’s volleyball program goes far beyond the kills, blocks, aces and digs in her statistics,” Delaney said. “She has been a leader on and off the court, a coach’s dream to work with, and a huge part of the success we have experienced over the past few years. You just can’t replace a Sadie Dick and will miss her big smile just as much as her big kills. I know she will succeed at whatever comes next.”

Dick’s connection to Brock is profound. Growing up, she often spent time on campus, where her father, John Dick, who is the Manager of Grounds Services, has worked since 2004.

“I used to train in the Bob Davis Gym as a kid,” Sadie said. “It’s fun to look back and think that I never imagined I’d end up here. I’ve always felt at home on this campus, and it made transitioning to life as a student-athlete so seamless.”

John recalls fond memories of Sadie’s early volleyball days and her journey back to Brock.

“After two years in the United States, she had lost her joy for the game, and it was heartbreaking,” he said. “When Steve reached out, we encouraged her to meet him, and she instantly knew he was the coach she wanted to play for. Watching her thrive again has been incredible, not just as a player but as a person.”

As a three-year captain, Dick has made it her mission to build a culture of accountability, sisterhood and fun within the team.

“Leadership isn’t just about setting high standards,” she said. “It’s also about creating an environment where everyone feels supported and can give their best, no matter what per cent they feel they have that day. Volleyball is one of the best parts of my day and I want my teammates to feel the same way.”

Her impact extends beyond the court. She emphasizes the importance of leaving a legacy for future Badgers.

“Our team culture is built on leaving a fingerprint for the next generation,” Dick said. “I hope my legacy includes a standard of leadership and creating a space where practice is fun and focused, giving us the best chance to succeed.”

Brock’s volleyball program has flourished with Dick’s contributions and the atmosphere she helps create resonates with fans.

“She loves playing in front of the huge hometown crowds,” said John, who can always be found standing next to the bleachers during a match. “Game days are special for our family. The excitement builds during the week, and it’s amazing to see her contributing to the team’s success.”

As Dick approaches the conclusion of her university volleyball career, she reflects on the lessons she’s learned and the memories she’s made.

“Post-secondary sports go by faster than you think,” she said. “I hope our younger student-athletes take the time to live in the moment, buy in, and immerse themselves fully in the team. That’s what I’ll remember most. Those moments on and off the court.”
