VOLLEYBALL (w): Nutritional science senior feeds Carabins a diet of digs, blocks and kills

MONTREAL – Charlene Robitaille of St. Jean, Que., scored a game-high 15.5 points as McGill cruised to a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Carabins in RSEQ women’s volleyball at the Centre CEPSUM, Sunday. The set scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-15.

It was only Martlets third win in their last 13 road meetings  against U de M, dating back to 2015.

Robitaille, a six-foot middle-blocker fed the Carabins a steady diet of digs (6), blocks (6) and kills (8). The 23-year-old nutritional science senior added a service ace and one assist.

Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., was the only other McGill player in double figures with 13.5 points. The third-year power-hitter racked up a game-high dozen kills, to go along with one ace, an assisted block and eight digs on defence.

Veteran setter Andreanne Tremblay, a medical student from Longueuil, Que., also had a solid outing with 26 assists, four kills, three aces, 10 digs and a pair of assisted blocks.

The Carabins were paced by Samwella Lukhanda, who had 12.5 points.

The tale of the tape indicated a hard-fought and evenly-matched battle. Both sides registered 37 kills, with McGill holding a slight edge in service aces (8-7) and digs (62-58). The key difference was in stuff blocks, where McGill had a 10-3 margin and in kill percentage, where McGill converted 18.4 per cent of their attempted kills, compared to 4.4 per cent by the Carabins.

McGill, which improved to 2-1 in regular season play, will travel to Quebec City on Friday to confront Laval (2-1). On the same day, Montreal (1-2) will host UQTR (0-2).
