This Saturday afternoon, the Waterloo Warriors faced off against the Nipissing Lakers in a crucial rematch following a 3-0 loss Friday night. Both teams entered the weekend in similar standings within the OUA, making this match pivotal for the Warriors position.
In the opening set, the Warriors kept pace with the Thunderwolves, matching them in kills, errors, and attack attempts. Despite their efforts, Lakehead edged out a 25-21 win to take the first set and instill that they had maintained their strong play style from the night before.
The second set saw Lakehead maintain control, jumping out to an early lead. The Warriors battled hard, but Lakehead’s formidable blocking, including key stops by their setter, posed a significant challenge. The Warriors called both timeouts early in a bid to regroup, with Will McIntyre (Waterloo, ON) making critical defensive plays to keep them in the game. Although the Warriors began trading points with Lakehead late in the set, the Thunderwolves secured it 25-17.
In the third set, Lakehead’s blocking dominance continued, forcing the Warriors to adapt. Strategic adjustments led to crafty plays like a clever tip over the net by Lucas Redmann (Winnipeg, MB), keeping the set competitive early on. The Warriors employed a mix of cross court attacks and soft touches to break through Lakehead’s defense. However, the Thunderwolves ultimately pulled away, taking the set 25-12 to seal the match.
Next weekend, the Warriors will host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, looking to rebound after a challenging weekend.
