Western opens weekend with dominant 3-0 win over Trent

Peterborough, ON – The Mustangs opened their weekend road trip to Peterborough with a straight set, 3-0 win over Trent Friday night.
 
Western took their 13th win of the season with set wins of 25-18, 25-14, and 25-16. This victory solidified their position as the 1st place team in the OUA.
 
Western began the first set with a slow start, but quickly regained momentum with Nyla Tukker contributing a kill at 4-2 and Emma Buntic adding a point to tie the game at 6-6. The Mustangs then capitalized on a series of errors by Trent, including a service error and a ball handling error, allowing them to take the lead. The set concluded with a dominant performance by the Mustangs, highlighted by Emma Buntic’s multiple kills, culminating in a 25-18 victory over Trent.
 
In the second set, Western began with a strong performance, highlighted by Karly Vrbanac’s service ace and a string of points that established an early lead of 5-1. Thea Ishida contributed significantly with a kill at 1:03 and a service ace at 8:2, bolstering the team’s momentum. As the set progressed, Tukker and Tessa McDermid each delivered crucial kills, while Kylie Maxwell closed the set with a series of decisive plays, including a kill at 22-14 and an attack error by the opposition, securing Western’s 25-14 victory.
 
In the third set, the Mustangs started strong with Robin Henshaw’s kill at the onset, followed by her service ace, leading to an early 2-0 advantage. Jade Longlad contributed significantly with a service ace, helping Western extend their lead to 5-2. Later in the set, Kaitlyn Doyle made a notable impact with a service ace at 17-11 and continued with another ace after a timeout, bringing the score to 18-11. Emma Buntic sealed the set with a kill, finalizing a 25-16 victory for Western.
 
Buntic stood out for the Mustangs with 9 kills over 22 total attacks, achieving a hitting percentage of .273. Tukker also made a significant contribution, leading the team with 11 kills and maintaining a .280 hitting percentage. Longlad added to the team’s serving strength, contributing seven assists and two service aces. Karly Vrbanac added to the team’s service game with 3 service aces, providing a reliable presence on the court.

NEXT GAME
The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon, set for a 4:00 pm start.
