The #4 USPORTS nationally ranked Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team took care of business on Saturday and Sunday with a respectable 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 27-29, and 25-21) win on Saturday and followed up with another tremendous 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16) road victory over the Brock Badgers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium inside of the Walker Complex in St. Catharines.
SATURDAY STATS
Chase Bridges and Gustavo Siqueira each shared the offensive lead with 14 kills each to help propel their team to a convincing victory on Saturday night.
From the service line, Siqueira recorded 2 service aces as did first year Will Brewer who also doubled up with a pair of aces from the line for Windsor.
Markus Law-Heese dished out 44 assists in helping to set his team up to a successful road win in the Garden City.
Above the tape, Anthony Ivanovski earned 7 blocks while Darian Koskie also recorded 5 blocks for the blue and gold from the middle.
SATURDAY GAME FLOW
The Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the opening set and continued to build after that.
Despite the Badgers looking to hang around with the Lancers on the scoreboard, Windsor would generate enough consistent offensive production to go up 1-0 in the match with a steady 25-17 first set score.
The second set was a bit more even as both sides saw exchanged leads and traded points quite regularly throughout the duration of the set.
With the Badgers on the heels of the Lancers, the blue and gold had to buckle down towards the latter part of the set where they were able to find success in doing so and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 second set win.
On the verge of a sweep, the Lancers rallied behind one another in front of a raucous and spirited pro-Brock home crowd. The blue and gold held a 16-10 advantage at the midway mark of the set.
However, to the delight of the Brock home crowd, ultimately the Badgers would find some life and a much-needed spark of momentum which allowed them to claw back into the set and scratch the Lancers armour and chances for a sweep with an upsetting 29-27 third set victory to prolong the match and give Windsor a 2-1 advantage.
An assured effort approach in the fourth set allowed the Lancers to stimulate regenerated confidence to be able to work together to stave off a potential fifth set challenge as their strong steady play with an optimized focus which allowed the blue
and gold visitors to emerge victorious in the end with a 25-21 fourth set victory and earn a 3-1 match result win.
SUNDAY STATS
Ivanovski led the way offensively for the blue and gold with 12 kills and 2 service aces in Sunday’s rematch affair.
Siqueira also contributed largely again with his 11 kills from the blue and gold’s captain.
Meanwhile the Lancers setter Law-Heese again orchestrated a solid offence with his 46-assist performance and 7 digs which led the team’s defensive efforts on the day.
SUNDAY GAME FLOW
Windsor held a firm grasp of the lead throughout the entire first set not conceding a lead to Brock at all and with that were able to take a convincing 25-17 set and 1-0 advantage in the match.
Brock would come alive in the second set looking to not be taken down easily as the red, blue and white found ways to rally around one another in their home gym and swipe the second set away from the Lancers with a 25-22 second set win to tie the match up at 1-1.
In what began as an even tilt to start the third set, the experienced Lancers would find a way to regain the confidence needed to close out the third set with conviction as the visitors took down the hosts 25-17 again and this time earned a 2-1 match lead edge.
In the fourth set, Windsor would once again dominate the scoreboard in favour of the guests side as they never surrendered the lead again after that and wrapped up the second match of the weekend at Brock on top with a 25-16 fourth set win and 3-1 repeat victory on the road to improve to 12-2 on the season.
