WOMEN’S VOLLEBALL: LAKERS OUTLAST GRYPHINS IN FIVE-SET THRILLER

The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team got back on the court to begin the second half of the season and the push to the OUA playoffs.

The Lakers took on the Guelph Gryphons in the first of two matches this weekend, as both attempt to make the climb up the league standings.

A competitive match went the distance, as the Lakers came away with a thrilling 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 25-27, 15-8) win over Guelph Friday night.

In the first set, the Lakers got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing 14-13 midway through the game.

The teams traded points down the stretch, but Guelph was able to stay ahead and eventually claimed the win, edging the Lakers 25-22.

The Lakers came out flying in the second set, powering their way to a 10-3 lead early on and grabbing control of the game.

They extended that lead to 16-8 midway through and were the first to hit 20, going up 20-12 late in the set.

Guelph began to push back late in the set, cutting the Lakers lead to just three points, as Nipissing led 23-20.

The Lakers held on to take the second set, 25-21, to tie the match up, 1-1.

In the third, the teams were even through the early part of the set, with the Lakers leading 13-12.

Down a few, Nipissing went on a run and pulled ahead 20-17 and didn’t look back.

After going up late in the set, Nipissing cruised to a 25-19 win to go up 2-0.

The fourth set, with the Lakers looking to close things out, was a battle.

An early 11-11 tie turned into an advantage for the Lakers, as they went up 16-14 midway through the game.

Guelph fought back, tying the game up late, 21-21, before going ahead 23-21, looking to extend the match.

Nipissing continued to fight on their side, closing the gap and trailing 24-23 in the final few points.

The teams traded points with the game on the line, but it was the Gryphons who came away with a tight 27-25 win to send the game to a fifth and deciding set.

In the final set, Nipissing took control of the final set at the midway point, after being tied 4-4 early,

A run of 4-2 and overall, 11-6, gave Nipissing the 15-8 win to claim the match.

Oceane Raymond-Leduc had a monster match for the Lakers, posting 25 kills, while Page Owen had 13 in the victory.

The same teams are back on the court Saturday afternoon at 2pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
