Queen’s Women’s Volleyball headed to Ottawa on Friday to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. After dropping the first set, the Gaels came back to secure the next three (14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19).
Several Gaels fought hard to take the win. Hannah Duchesneau (Arts & Science) and Mary Stewart (Education) secured 14 and 13 kills respectively. Claire Carter (Business) added six service aces and Amanda Siksna (Education) put up another five.
Through the first set, the Gee-Gees took an early lead as the Gaels struggled to execute on offense. Ottawa held Queen’s to an attack efficiency of 0.042 and took the set.
Despite struggling on offense, the Gaels maintained strong service pressure, with Carter finding back-to-back service aces.
The Gaels came out refocused in the second and bagged the first four points of the set. Kennedy Millin (Education) ran an electric offense as the Gaels built up the point differential.
Millin closed out the match with 36 assists and also contributed to the Gael’s defense with 14 digs.
Carter maintained an aggressive presence at the service line and again secured back-to-back aces. Carter currently sits atop the OUA in service aces and service aces per set.
With a consistent lead, the Gaels secured the second set.
In the third, the Gaels kept their rhythm and easily pulled ahead of the Gee-Gees with big kills from Stewart.
Siksna also put up two consecutive service aces to extend the Gael’s lead.
Despite a strong effort from Ottawa toward the end of the set, Queen’s powered through and took it.
The Gee-Gees put up a final fight in the fourth, with long rallies as each team defended well, however could not stop the Gaels.
Women’s Volleyball takes on the Gee-Gees for the second game of their doubleheader on Feb. 15, at 4pm, with a win providing home court advantage through their playoff run. Fans can catch the action on oua.tv.
